I purchased 3.5 grams of Gabriel’s Orange Kush Breath flower from Higher Leaf in Kirkland, WA. Tested by Confidence Analytics, its Strain Data Project compass is Orange.

The product came in a small clear glass jar, labeled with a nutrition-styled compliance label. It is capped with a plug topper with a rubber O-ring to preserve freshness. In the jar were four nugs of comparable size, and a large fifth nug, double the size of the others. Opening the jar released very strong aromas of sweet oranges and other tropical citrus fruits.

The nugs give in easily when squeezed, releasing a citrus aroma, and leaving behind a sticky residue on the fingers. Bright orange calyxes are littered throughout the nug, while the surface of every petal is fuzzy with light whitish hairs and speckled with clear trichomes. Breaking a nug apart reveals nearly no stem at all. The stems are very slight, resulting in a crowded presentation of buds. The open nug releases new scents of metallic oxidation supporting the fruity notes while sweet orange continues to dominate the profile.

After grinding, the metallic scents open up more broadly, adding hints of ozone and chlorine notes. The orange and other fruit scents layer on top to create notes of tart cherry, cavendish banana, and jackfruit. Leaving the grinder open, and the material exposed for several minutes, the scents persist! The metallic foundation is still easily detectable under a primary layer of juicy fruit, and the combination now produces a mild funk of earthiness and huitlacoche.

After being left out for several more minutes, I warmed the ground material in my hands. The metallic notes finally fade into a blend of pine and alder woods. It is remarkable how long the dominant aroma profile remains present despite grinding and open air exposure.
